Overview
A 'storage full' warning blocks updates, photos and backups — but you can usually reclaim gigabytes in minutes. This guide shows how to see exactly what's using space, then clear the biggest offenders (photos, videos, downloads and app caches) without losing anything you care about.
Symptoms you might see
- A 'storage full' or 'storage almost full' warning keeps appearing.
- You can't take photos, install apps or run a system update.
- Apps crash or fail to save data.
- Backups won't complete.
Possible causes
- Photos and videos consuming most of the storage.
- Large apps and their cached data.
- Old downloads and message attachments piling up.
- System and cache files growing over time.
- A phone with limited base storage that fills quickly.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
Work through these in order — the earliest steps are the safest and fix the most cases.
-
See what is using space
Open Settings, Storage. The breakdown shows your biggest consumers — usually photos, videos and apps — and many phones offer a 'free up space' tool at the top. Start with whatever category is largest.
-
Clear out photos and videos
Video is by far the heaviest. Delete clips you don't need, then empty the recently-deleted/trash album to actually reclaim the space. Turn on cloud photo backup so you can safely remove local copies while keeping the originals.
-
Use the built-in cleanup tool
Open your Files or storage-cleanup app and let it suggest junk to remove — duplicate photos, large files, old downloads and app caches. Review the suggestions, then clear them in a couple of taps.
-
Clear large app caches
In Settings, Apps, open the biggest apps (streaming, social and maps are common culprits) and clear their cache. This removes temporary files without deleting your accounts or data, and can free a lot at once.
-
Remove downloads and unused apps
Delete downloaded videos, music, offline maps and documents you no longer need. Uninstall apps you haven't opened in months — you can always reinstall them later from the store.
-
Restart to clear temporary files
A restart lets the system clear some temporary files and recalculate storage. If your phone supports an SD card, moving photos and media to it can also free internal space for apps and updates.
Before you go further: back up your device to a cloud backup or a computer whenever possible. Steps that could affect your data are clearly flagged — and for suspected hardware faults, a qualified repair professional is the safest next step.
Prevention tips
- Turn on cloud photo backup so you can safely remove local copies.
- Clear caches of heavy apps every so often.
- Delete large videos and downloads once you're done with them.
- Review Storage monthly and clear the biggest items.
- Keep a few gigabytes free so updates always have room.
Frequently asked questions
What is taking up all my storage?
Open Settings, Storage for a breakdown. On most phones it's photos and videos first, then large apps and their caches, then downloads. Tackle the largest category first for the quickest wins.
Is it safe to clear an app's cache?
Yes. Clearing the cache removes temporary files only — it doesn't delete your account, messages or saved data. The app simply rebuilds its cache as you use it. It's one of the safest ways to free space.
Will deleting photos remove them from my backup?
If cloud backup has already saved them, deleting the local copy frees space while the originals stay in the cloud. Confirm the backup is complete and up to date before removing local photos.
